First, overpopulation in Seoul metropolitan area makes house prices increased in there. This phenomenon makes people who should live in there – for their jobs or school etc. - hard to buy a house in there. It would increase the burden of young people who should prepare their house. And it leads young people to give up the marriage and child birth. Finally, it causes the birth rates decreased, and the number of new-born-babies also will be decreased. Then, Korean population will be decreased and the progress of aging in Korea will be accelerated.

Second, overconcentration in small area intensifies competition. This increases people’s stress. Then, more people would try the suicide and suicide rate would be increased. Increased suicide rate and decreased birth rates create a synergy effect, it leads to population dead cross – the phenomenon in which the death toll exceeds the number of newborn – which leads to a decrease in population.

Third, overconcentration in the metropolitan area would lead the extinction of provinces. Because of the low birth rate, the number of students decreases, making it difficult to operate local universities. Then, many universities in provinces would be closed. Only popular and famous universities remain, and the remained provincial universities would not even know when they will be closed. So, the number of universities will be decreased and it would become harder than before to entrance the university.

Because of these reasons, overconcentration in Seoul metropolitan area should be solved. Then, how can we solve this problem?

It is simple but not easy – don’t make the reasons why people must stay in or have to move to Seoul metropolitan area remained.

First, let some big companies’ headquarters in Seoul move to the various regions located far away from Seoul like Yeongnam or Honam area. It could be the best way to spread people living in Seoul for their jobs to various cities in Korea. And, make the name-valued universities move to provinces can also be the way to spread students who stay in there for their school.

Second, increase the infra in the provinces. To make the quality of life in provinces same with the Seoul metropolitan area removes the reason why people prefer to live in Seoul

Third, encouraging agriculture in provinces by consuming vegetables, crops or fruits made in Korea could also help to relieve the overconcentration. By our supporting for country side, people in country side can make more money with farming, then they don’t need to move to urban areas to find other jobs.

Lastly, each city should keep their identity and try to make people stay in their city. The different charm in each city can make people stay in the city.
