  • Next in fashion: Environmental Effects of Fast-Fashion
Fast-Fashion, the apparel business model in which the remarkably inexpensive products are quickly circulated, chasing up the trends, best describes current fashion industries. ZARA, one of the most popular Fast-Fashion brands, refreshes its collections almost twice a week and always serves the newest fashion trends to consumers while maintaining low prices. This sounds quite fascinating until you find out the dark truth hiding behind this industry.
Today¡¯s fashion industry is the second-largest polluter in the world just after the oil industry. Especially when it comes to water resources, it is a huge consumer and a polluter at the same time. A tremendous amount of fresh water is needed for garment production. In fact, a single ton of dyed fabric can require up to 200 tons of fresh water. Moreover, up to 20,000 liters of water are needed to produce just 1kg of cotton. This has critical ecological consequences such as the desertification of the Aral Sea, where cotton production has drained the entire water now.
Countries where fast-clothings are mostly produced usually have lenient environmental regulations. In these countries, toxic wastewaters containing harmful chemicals such as mercury emitted by textile factories are released directly into the rivers and eventually contaminate the whole ecosystem. Owing to the mass-production of cheap garments and countless new collections every year, clothing has become a disposable good and as such, tons of textile waste are generated every day. In fact, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is wasted every second, and textile wastes account for 5.2% of total reclaimed waste. Synthetic fibers, which are used in 72% of our clothing, are non-biodegradable, and therefore take up to 200 years to decompose.
What can we do to reduce the negative impacts of the fashion industry on the environment? The answer is simple. Buy less and wear more. ¡°Don¡¯t Buy This Jacket.¡± It was a well-known catchphrase of Patagonia. It means you shouldn't buy new clothes if you already have one. It is also a good idea to purchase only high-quality garments so that you can wear clothes for a longer period. And if you have clothes that you don¡¯t wear anymore, think twice before you throw them away, because perhaps a little recycling could help.
Everything we make& consume take something away from the planet, but we can¡¯t give them back; whereas everything we throw away can stay even longer on the planet than we do. If you really love fashion, it is time for you to take action, or there will be no Next in Fashion.
