On October 1st, the world mourned the passing of Jane Goodall, one of the worldʼs most influential and respected scientists. Born in England in 1934, Goodall developed a passion for animals at a very young age. After leaving school, she traveled to Africa to study chimpanzees. She spent many years observing chimps in Tanzania, and her research forever changed how people understand animals and their emotions.Life With Chimpanzees
In 1960, Goodall arrived in Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study chimpanzees and learn more about their similarities to humans. During her time with the chimps, Goodall discovered that they are omnivores, not herbivores.
She also learned that chimpanzees make and use their own tools, which was previously a trait only found in humans. Her observations helped show that chimpanzees have complex thoughts and feelings, and they are more similar to people than we could have imagined.
Environmental Activist
After spending many years in the African forests, Goodall devoted her life to protecting nature. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. She also started Roots & Shoots, a global youth program that encourages young people to care for the planet. Even in her 90s, Goodall continued to travel, speak, and inspire others.
