On December 10th, a special ceremony will be held in Stockholm, Sweden. There, this year’s winners of the Nobel Prize will be honored.Among them is Korean author Han Kang, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature. She is only the second Nobel laureate from Korea, after the late President Kim Dae-jung.
Han was born in Gwangju in 1970. She began her literary career by publishing poems in a magazine in 1993. Later, she began writing novels.
One of her famous novels is “The Vegetarian.” It is about a woman who refuses to eat meat in order to protest against society.
Like many of Han’s books, “The Vegetarian” has been translated into other languages, including English. In 2016, it even won the Man Booker International Prize* in the United Kingdom.
When Han’s Nobel Prize was announced in October, people throughout Korea celebrated the news. Many people rushed to bookstores to purchase copies of her books.
At the ceremony in Sweden, Han will officially receive her Nobel Prize medal and a diploma. She will also get a cash award of around 1.4 billion won.
