  • Slow Fashion for the Environment

Teen Scoop 1077È£

Have you heard about slow fashion? If so, what about fast fashion? Fast fashion is a type of clothing business model that sells the latest fashion fast and cheap. These businesses mainly include Zara, H&M, and Temu. Because of its overproduction, fast fashion has been a big problem for the environment these days.
First, when making clothes, it uses a lot of water. This is a problem for other clothes, too. The main material for fast fashion is usually cotton, and it takes a lot of water to grow cotton and make clothes out of it. For example, one white cotton T-shirt takes 2,700 liters of water to make it which is the equivalent to a person¡¯s drinking water for 2 years and 11 months! The Clothing industry consumes about 93 trillion liters of water every year.
There are pollution problems as well, with chemicals made when making clothes. Out of these chemicals, up to 80% of them are only partially treated when being dumped into water.
Second, after selling the clothes, waste is a big problem too. According to Google, 80% of textiles end up in incinerators and landfills. Also, synthetic fibers like polyester release 500,000 tons of microplastics worldwide every year when being washed at home or thrown away.
As you can see, fast fashion causes a lot of environmental problems from start to finish. In order to deal with this issue, people adopted a different approach, called ¡®slow fashion¡¯.
Slow fashion means clothes that last years of time, and use eco-friendly materials when making them. Unlike fast fashion, slow fashion brands make small amounts of clothes every time so they worry less about throwing clothes away easily when they are not sold to customers.
But slow fashion might be hard to approach because these clothes tend to be more expensive than fast fashion clothes. One of the leading slow fashion brands is Patagonia. This brand uses organic and recycled materials to save the environment. Patagonia also uses timeless designs and repairs clothes for their consumers at a low price or even for free.
Here are some tips for slow fashion. As defenders of our own planet, trying the following tips could be a wise choice.
First, don¡¯t buy clothes unless you need them, and don¡¯t throw them away just because you don¡¯t like them.
Second, use slow fashion brands and buy used or vintage clothes. Upcycle clothes which is giving a new life to old clothes, like making an old T-shirt into a bag.
Third, think about wearing clothes that last years of time both with the material and design. Think before you buy clothes. This can prevent impulse purchases.
These are some tips for pursuing slow fashion. Following these tips will help the earth. How about going through your wardrobe before going shopping for the next SS or FW season?
