Recently, zoos increased in number and type. It increased due to peoples¡¯ growing interest on animal, however, animals in zoos are completely out of focus when people¡¯s interest decrease. This led to neglecting animals, which is one of the biggest issues in Korea now.

In 2016, Seoul City announced, ¡°5 principles of animal welfare¡¯. It is based on the ¡®5 rights of animals¡¯ which is regulated by WOAH (World Organization for Animal Health). First, freedom from hunger and thirst. Second, freedom from discomfort. Third, freedom from pain, injury, or disease. Fourth, freedom to express normal behavior. Fifth, freedom from fear and distress. These five principles must be followed in any situation, however, most of zoos do not. One zoo in Gimhae left lions unattended enough to show their ribs or gave them rotten camel meat for food. Also, they raised lions on the cement floor, which strained lions¡¯ joints. Dong-A Science reported that only 7% of the cage of the zoo in South Korea follows ¡®5 principles of animal welfare¡¯. On the other hand, a zoo in Cheongju protects wild and unpopular animals in large and pleasant places. Moreover, they provide superior food and regular checkups for animals.

¡°All zoos should create an environment as similar as possible to where the animals originally lived.¡± Shin Nam-sik, an honorary professor at Seoul National University, said. Zoos should be more comfortable and pleasant places for animals by creating an environment like their home. We all should respect animals as the same precious organism by decreasing their stress and guaranteeing their freedom.
