  • Is it good to raise crops with fertilizer?

Have you ever noticed your parents washing the fruits and vegetables with soda or vinegar?

I once became so curious why they do that and found out the answer is to get rid of fertilizer used to grow the crops. So, are fertilizers that bad? Through some research, I have realized that there are pros and cons of fertilizer.

The first advantage of using fertilizer is that the plant’s growth can be enhanced. In the fertilizer there are Nitrogen that fasten the growth of the crops and nutrients to help crops develop bigger.

The next benefit is that fertilizer can make more stable and predictable yield. Fertilizer also contains substances that kill the pest. This will diminish the opportunity of being the victims of the pests.

However, fertilizer is a double-edged sword.

Using fertilizer is unnatural. Usually, most plants should survive with their own strength. The intervention of the fertilizer can damage the ecosystem. Also, in the long term the environment will change, making soil less fertile over time.

Furthermore, if we continue using fertilizer, harmful elements can end-up in our food. We will intake bad substances inevitably. Since there are both advantages and disadvantages of using fertilizer, optimizing the usage of the fertilizer is important. By adapting techniques such as modifying the rate, timing, placement and form of application, farmers will be able to keep the yield rate as well as the environment.
