In the heart of Bemidji, Minnesota, there is a Korean village called Sup Sogui Hosu ("½£ ¼ÓÀÇ È£¼ö"). The primary objective of the Korean village is to offer an authentic Korean cultural and linguistic experience for non-heritage learners between the age of 7 and 18. Non-heritage learners refer to those who have no prior exposure to Korea, including Non-Korean individuals residing in the United States.
To provide a gratifying experience to its participants, the village leads students on a hands-on journey through various aspects of Korean life, such as making traditional Korean meals, creating Korean names, and learning Korean numbers. There is even a ¡°BaegHwaJeom¡± (shopping mall) where students can use Korean currency to purchase souvenirs. As such, every experience is geared towards participants¡¯ increased understanding of life in Korea.
But how did this village find its place in Northern Minnesota? Its foundation can be traced back to 1997 when Professor Ross King, faculty member at the University of British Columbia in Korean language and literature, initiated the planning process. By 1999, the program was successfully launched under his guidance. Today, the baton is carried by Professor Daphne Ozur, who is also a great faculty member in Stanford University, specializing in Korean literature.
Sup Sogui Hosu celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2024. And since its foundation, it has played an important role in spreading Korean culture to its eager participants. In fact, according to professor Ozur, the program draws so many candidates that, to win a place, one must be as competitive as when they are trying to purchase a BTS concert ticket, which sells out in a matter of seconds. She adds that such popularity is largely attributed to the widespread global fascination with K-pop and Hallyu.
Summer is the best time of the year to rest, relax, and explore one¡¯s interests. And this year, like the past 25 long years, American teenagers are excitedly walking into the forest to experience the language and culture of Korea.
