  • The Power of Apology
  What comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘power?‘ If you‘re like most people, you will think of physical strength, super-hearing, and night vision, etc. But do you think there is power in an apology?


  Have you ever heard about British colonization over indigenous Australians that occurred in 1788? Australian aborigines were treated harshly by the settlers. They took children away from their families, kept them in mission stations, and washed them with western values. This is called the story of‘stolen generations.’ Yet, there came a light of hope when the Australian government gave a formal apology to the indigenous Australians in 2008. This led to reconciliation and peace in the country.

  

  I, myself, have experienced the power of apology. A friend of mine started to stay away for some reason, and I soon realized from a distinct memory that I had said something that might have hurt her feelings. After school, I went to her and said an apology and asked why she had been so angry. Sure enough, it was about the painful sentence that had been poison to her. She thankfully accepted my apology and we set off to be best friends even after that incident. So imagine if I hadn’t said a word to her! We wouldn’t have been able to say hello to each other.


  People would at least have said one apology in their lifetime. Do you have a memory that involves an“I’m sorry?” If so, you probably put tremendous efforts to spit it out first. It’s hard to apologize first, but after all, it’s the magic word that can make a big change. So if you fought a friend and didn’t say sorry yet, knock on your friend’s door and say just five letters; Sorry!
