The Rube Goldberg Machine: Futile Results Yet Pleasurable Unfolding

           Complex gears resulting in simple actions are known as the Rube Goldberg machine, noted for its entertaining procedures in completing a task with unnecessarily intricate progress. The concept of the Rube Goldberg Machine was created by the American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who drew cartoon strips regarding sketches of various gears completing a task in a rather needlessly complex manner. One of his most famous works, Professor Butts and the Self-Operating Napkin, depicts the use of spoons, strings, crackers, a bird, a perch, seeds, a cord, an igniting lighter, a skyrocket, a string-cutting scythe, and a pendulum-clock, all to make the pendulum to swing back-and-forth, thus cleaning Professor Butt’s chin.

           Rube Goldberg, the creator of the entertaining idea, is also an engineer and an inventor, allowing him to imagine hilarious inventions with the help of his fine knowledge of engineering. He is best known as an accomplished cartoonist, honored by the Pulitzer Prize for Illustrated Reporting and Commentary, a prize awarded to the most distinguished cartoon or visual reports.

           Goldberg’s iconic form of invention gained popularity globally, and various competitions were held during contemporary times. Universities and nongovernmental organizations started these unique and creativity-requiring contests for different purposes. However, Goldberg’s influence on modern inventions can be shown through kinetic art, a form of visual art that represents the movements of objects. Many kinetic artists, trying to embed vivid accounts of motion, were deeply intrigued by Goldberg’s styles, and Goldberg and his machines’ impact on the medium is undeniably significant.

           The Goldberg machine may be perceived as a method only created for pure entertainment, and the view is not an incorrect one. It is true that the invention’s sole purpose is for the reader’s enjoyment, created for humor. But we can extend that value to recognize the Goldberg machine as a form of organizing various techniques, as many as possible, to link the dissimilar methods into a chain reaction with a clear result, thus invoking creativity in the designer. Perhaps there is much more to the concept than a humorous depiction of ridiculousness; an interesting activity in linking different concepts together in an improbable yet creative outlook.
