"What Wayside School Taught Me About Normal"

By Lee Si Kang, BEODLE Elementary school

I recently read Sideways Stories from Wayside School. It is one of the funniest books I have ever read.

Many strange things happen in Wayside School. Mrs. Gorf can turn children into apples. Mrs. Jewls thinks children are monkeys. Jason gets stuck to his chair because of chewing gum. These things are not normal in real life, but they are normal in Wayside School.

The character I remember most is Ron. Ron wants to play soccer, but he is not very good at it. He feels sad because he cannot kick the ball well. When I read about Ron, I thought about my own school. Some children are good at sports, and some are good at studying. Everyone is different.

This book made me think about the meaning of ¡°normal.¡± At first, I thought normal meant being like everyone else. After reading this book, I think normal means being yourself. People have different strengths and weaknesses, and that is okay.

Before reading this book, I thought normal meant doing things the right way. Now I think normal can be different for each person.
