Three Questions, Three Discoveries

By Kim Sean, St.Bernardine¡¯s Catholic School

Today, I am going to tell you about some times when curiosity led me to learn something new. First, I will tell you three times that curiosity led the way.

First, I was curious about the Coke and Mentos experiment. I was curious if it would work on other sodas. So, I got bottles of Fanta, Coke, Sprite, Pepsi, and Coke Zero. I put a Mentos in the Fanta. It didn¡¯t explode that much, so I rated it four out of ten. Next, I put another Mentos in the Coke. It exploded like it usually does. I rated it six out of ten. After that, I put Mentos inside Sprite. It didn¡¯t explode very high or far, so I gave it a five out of ten. Then, I dropped the Mentos into the Coke Zero, and the Coke shot up high. I gave it a nine out of ten.

Second, I wanted to know how hard concrete is. To answer that question, I found a book I really liked. It was about radiation. Then, I read about radiation in the book. It said radiation could go through paper, aluminum, and small layers of concrete. This type of radiation was called ¡°Cobalt-60¡±. But if the concrete was one meter thick, Cobalt-60, Beta, and Alpha radiation cannot escape. So, to stay safe, using concrete that¡¯s over one meter thick is the best way to survive after a nuclear accident.

Third, I was curious about how a stamp works. So, I got a highlighter, colored on my finger, and pressed it to a sheet of paper. A fingerprint appeared, and the highlighter ink stayed on the paper. So, I finally realized that there is ink in the highlighter.

In conclusion, being curious can lead the way. I learned three things because I was curious: Coke Zero explodes the highest, concrete over one meter thick can block radiation, and ink from a highlighter works like a stamp.
