  • Nuclear Weapons: A Double Edged Sword
On January 22, 2021, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force with 69 state parties. The treaty aims to ban nuclear weapons, bringing global nuclear weapons arsenals down to zero. It is true that nuclear weapons can be a threat to humanity worldwide if used with inhumane intentions. However, nuclear weapons are not the only threat to humanity. There are a tremendous amount of other threats as well, including genetically engineered biological weapons, super volcanoes, extreme climate change, nanotechnology, and artificial superintelligence. These are all elements that can generate existential harm, whether defined as the collapse of human civilization or literal human extinction. Nowadays, technology is improving at a fast pace, and the threat of new technologies and climate change are getting bigger. To address those challenges, humanity needs global cooperation to align policies, pool resources, maintain globally critical supply chains, build useful technologies, and prevent the development of harmful technologies. Nuclear deterrence can help make that happen. Thus, I believe that nuclear weapons should not be banned world wide. Banning nuclear weapons will pose an even bigger threat to humanity than nuclear weapons itself.
Firstly, as I mentioned before, nuclear deterrence, which is the concept that possessing nuclear weapons prevents potential adversaries from engaging in threatening activities, can help humanity to unite in order to address the global challenges that can potentially put an end to us humans. Nuclear abolition creates serious risk of returning to an era of great power conflict, which could drastically increase existential risk. As Iskander Rehman wrote in his recent in-depth study of great power war: ¡°Protracted great power wars are immensely destructive, whole-of-society affairs, the effects of which typically extend well beyond their point of origin, spilling across multiple regions and siphoning huge amounts of personnel, materiel and resources¡¦ Ultimately, protracted great-power wars usually only end when an adversary faces total annihilation, or collapses under the weight of its own exhaustion.¡± If the great powers collapse, the global system may collapse with them. Nuclear deterrence can help prevent that. Because the risk of attacking a country with a nuclear weapon is extremely high, and because the possession of nuclear weapons creates a situation in which any country involved in the war can be completely destroyed in just a few seconds, the majority of the country will hesitate before attacking other countries, therefore preventing wars.
Secondly, quick, complete abolition of nuclear weapons is not the solution for the threat that nuclear weapons hold. Current nuclear weapon strategies depend on targeting adversary nuclear weapons, so if one country builds more nuclear weapons, so will its enemies. If this continues, nuclear arsenal sizes could quickly spiral upwards. In order to address these problems we must try to reduce nuclear arsenals or risk reduction measures like improved crisis management and ensuring human control over nuclear weapons, not promote complete nuclear abolition. Like I mentioned before, nuclear abolition can create even more conflicts than before such as power conflicts. Therefore, banning nuclear weapons worldwide is not a path leading to world peace. It is a path leading to the destruction of our own species. I hope for a world in which everyone and every country is in peace.
