Why Is Red Considered
¡°Lucky¡± in Chinese Culture?

As
lanterns light up the street, fireworks exploding high up in the sky, the new
year brings festive joy to many cultures, especially Chinese people. The year
of the horse is predicted to bring much luck and prosperity, but the question
remains: why is red considered lucky in Chinese culture?
Red
is a color that symbolizes fire, vitality, and happiness, historically believed
by many to fight off the evil monster, ¡°Nian.¡± According to folklore from long
ago, Nian was an evil monster roaming around China who feared the color red,
loud noises, and bright lights. Ring a bell? Chinese New Year is filled with
red colors, firecrackers that make nights never silent, and lanterns and
fireworks that brighten the entire dark sky. The color red is also known to
signify joy, success, and prosperity for the new year.
However,
this year is a bit different from others. 2026 is the year of the fire horse,
which some say is the peak of the color red this year. Wearing red clothing may
push the balance too far in one direction, meaning it may bring bad luck. Many
compare this belief to ¡°adding gasoline to a fire.¡± So, what are we supposed to
wear? Donning clothes that contrast red, such as dark green and blue, has been
recommended by several individuals.
There
are many traditions such as not washing your hair since it may ¡°wash the
fortune away¡± and avoiding cutting your hair, which is also said to prevent
catastrophe. In conclusion, the color red is a significant color in Chinese
culture, holding many beliefs, traditions, and meanings.
