Is Math the Most
Important School Subject?

We learn many subjects at
school. All subjects are important, but there is room for debate whether math
is the most important subject or not. Some might think math is the most
important subject. However, I disagree on this issue. I will tell you why.
First, there are many jobs
that don’t need math much. For instance, soccer players do not need math
abilities. According to FIFA, there are 27 million players. In Korea, the
average annual salary is around 235 million won. There are many people who are
still living a decent life without math abilities.
Second, balanced learning is
important. The practicality of all subjects is similar. We use speaking and
writing as well as math. Also, social studies can be used when voting. Math is
not especially important compared to any other subject. According to a
research, math skills can’t guarantee success in life, and soft skills are
important.
Third, math can’t cultivate
social skills. Math problems are designed to be solved alone, not with other
people. Subjects like moral education can grow students’ teamwork. If people
only solve math problems in school, they won’t be able to develop social
skills. Because most math classes are answer-focused assessments, students
can’t cultivate social skills.
In conclusion, math is not
the most important subject. There are jobs that don’t need math a lot, and
balanced learning is important. In addition, math can’t cultivate social
skills. I don’t mean math is not important, math is equally important as all subjects
are. I hope you study all subjects equally.
