What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word `catastrophe¡¯ or `crisis¡¯? Earthquakes? Or to be more vastly, global warming? Surprisingly, there is one more, which is a phenomenon which the amount of food that people can eat is very little. Food is a necessary thing for survival. Even though it sounds like a distant problem, in some parts of the world, we are already suffering from food shortage. There are three solutions about it. Using modern technology, knowing the current situation, and being aware of it from getting worse.
First, we can use modern technology to solve
the food shortage problem. AI tech is quickly developing, and there will soon be
AGIs (Artificial General Intelligences), which can do a lot of work all by
itself and is much smarter than AIs. So, it is highly likely that the A(G)Is
will give us an practical and efficient solutions to solve the problem with the
vast amount of information it has access to. Also, without AIs, we can use
AgTech, which means agricultural technology to make more food and providing it
to many people fairly and equally which can solve the food shortage problem.
Like this, proactively using technology, we can solve the food shortage
problem.
Second,
we have to know the current situation and evaluate the solution. There are many
examples of weaknesses being found after executing a so called solution. For
example, there is the Green Great Wall Project of China. They planted lots of
trees to stop landscapes from turning into a desert, but ended up wasting water
and decreasing the biodiversity. Also, there is the example of the project
Target Canada, which is a project to revive the Canadian market. The government
executed the project without enough information about local shopping habits, and
pricing expectations. The data was inaccurate, leading to empty shelves and
poor customer experiences. We can know that not enough assessment, the solution
could fail, so we need to figure out the current situation and evaluate the
solution as much as we can.
Third, we have to prevent food shortage from
getting worse. Instead of trying to solve the problem of food shortage
immediately, we have to do it step by step. And the first step is to slow down
the rate of the problem spreading across the globe. We can do it by doing
simple things like eating less meat or eating local food. Also, we can reduce
shower time, because using less water means that we can grow food with that
water. Trying to solve the problem that is making 24,000 people die each day at
once is almost impossible, so we should do it slowly improve the situation.
In this way, we can solve or at least slow down the problem of food shortage. I hope that in the near future, food shortage can become just a story from a SF book and will never happen again.
