  • Permaculture and How You Can Start a Backyard Garden

What is permaculture? The word 'permaculture' can be split up into two parts: 'perma' and 'culture'. 'Perma' stands for the word 'permanent', and 'culture' stands for 'agriculture'. So, permaculture can be changed to 'permanent agriculture'. It is a design system for creating sustainable and self-sustaining human environments by mimicking natural ecosystems.

When practicing permaculture, you need to be efficient and eco-friendly with your choices. It's all about how well you use nature for your purposes. There are twelve principles of permaculture, developed by Mollison and David Holmgren, the founders of permaculture. Every one of those principles are important, but I would like to introduce just a few.

One key principle is 'Catch and Store Energy'. There are many types of energy on the planet, including solar energy and wind energy. Solar energy is useful when you have your own garden in your backyard, or even for growing plants on your windowsill. You can catch and store renewable energy like this, which is key to having a good permaculture garden.

Another principle is 'Obtain a Yield'. This principle means we should use permaculture to gain things that we need. An example could be to grow your own food, with which you can obtain produce. This 'yield' might also mean happiness and an emotional gain. For example, I am growing cherry tomatoes in my veranda, and as I watch the small green tomatoes slowly ripen into big red ones, I feel a huge amount of satisfaction.

'Use Small, Slow Solutions' is also a key principle in permaculture. It tells us that while practicing permaculture, we should make small changes at a time. When we rush things, it could turn into a tough situation. It is always good to have a steady and unhurried attitude. For example, don't try to expand your garden rapidly, but add one plant at a time. Also, having a windowsill garden is okay, and there is no need to start a big farm or a backyard garden. Using small solutions can help you finish your job better.

These are some key principles when starting a permaculture garden. Some good plants for you to grow in your backyard or veranda include herbs like basil or peppermint, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and green onions, all of which are very simple to grow. I highly recommend you try and grow at least two plants, whether on your windowsill or in your backyard. Having a permaculture garden is a very enjoyable and rewarding activity that can help you learn a lot about nature and also save the environment.
