Unfortunately, they are now endangered. Their natural habitats are the lakes of Mexico. These lakes are being destroyed by pollution, farming, and invasive species.

Scientists in Mexico are working together to save axolotls. Many of the animals are currently raised in labs and aquariums. But the question was whether they could survive in the wild.

To find out, 18 axolotls with radio transmitters were taken from the labs and aquariums. Then, they were released into a lake and a man-made wetland. Fortunately, the data from the transmitters showed the axolotls adapting well to both areas.

Experts say restoring natural habitats is the primary goal. However, artificial wetlands could offer a backup plan for protecting this fascinating species.

아흘로틀
