History of Earth Day

Earth Day was first celebrated in the United States on April 22nd, 1970. At the time, pollution was a big issue, and many people were feeling worried about the environment. A senator named Gaylord Nelson wanted to bring more attention to these issues, so he planned a day when people could learn and take action together.

On that first Earth Day, 20 million Americans participated in rallies, demonstrations, and educational programs across the country. The massive turnout led to the establishment of the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act in the U.S.

Earth Day Activities

Every Earth Day, people around the globe take steps to help the environment. Some people choose to show their support by planting trees, picking up trash, or recycling materials.

Other people join events to learn more about climate change and conservation. Schools, businesses, and organizations also host activities to teach people how to live sustainably. In recent years, online campaigns have greatly helped to spread the message.
