Albino animals are born without a pigment called melanin.* So, their skin, fur, feathers, or scales are white.

Albinism* is found in many types of animals. But it is quite rare. It occurs in about 1 in 20,000 animals.

Unfortunately, albino animals face challenges in the wild. They cannot blend into their environment. So, they are easily spotted by predators.

Despite such challenges, albino animals are fascinating. They are a beautiful part of the animal kingdom, even though they are different.

Migaloo

One of the most well-known albino animals is Migaloo. The white humpback whale* was first spotted off Australia’s* east coast in 1991. He is even protected by the law. No vessel is allowed to approach within 500 meters of Migaloo.

Melanism

The opposite of albinism is melanism. It causes an excessive amount of melanin. Animals with melanism have dark or completely black skin or feathers.

알비노 동물들
