https://upfile.neungyule.com/upload_admin/2026/02/j202603_01.jpgThe number of pet owners in Korea is rising. Now, almost 30 percent of the Korean population lives with a pet.

According to a report in 2025, 15.46 million Koreans belong to households that own either a dog or a cat. This means that nearly three out of 10 Koreans are pet owners.

On average, each household spends about 200,000 won per month on pets. The money is mainly used for food and grooming. Pet owners also pay for pet insurance, training classes, and even vacations.

As a result, Korea¡¯s pet-related businesses earned about 3 trillion won in 2020. By 2027, their profits are expected to reach nearly 6 trillion won.

The 2025 report also looked at how people adopt their pets. According to the report, the most popular way is through friends and family. Another common way is to visit animal shelters and adopt abandoned dogs or cats.

On the other hand, the greater number of pets could lead to problems in society. Because of this, the Korean government made a law in 2025, requiring all dogs to wear a leash outside. Previously, the law made an exception for some smaller dog breeds.
