  • About Slow Fashion

 Fashion follows trends. So clothing companies lower the price to increase the speed of production. This way, the consumer will be able to buy fashion items more easily and tend to purchase unnecessary clothing following the fashion trends. This is the problem of “fast fashion”. In the production process, to make a shirt needs 2700L of water and the wastewater produced accounts for about 20 percent of the world's wastewater. Also, chemical products that are used to color clothes and the microplastics that come from washing cause environmental pollution.

 

 But thankfully, with many interests, there has been a change in fashion, too. It’s called a “slow fashion”. It was first used by Kate Fletcher in the Sustainable Fashion Center, UK. It means using eco-friendly materials and slowing down the production/consumption of clothes, thinking about the environment, and enjoying fashion slowly. Famous fashion brand Freitag and Patagonia also seeks slow fashion.

 

 Then how can individuals fulfill slow fashion? You can start by following these 3 instructions.

 

 First, don’t buy clothing caught up in fashion. You might get sick of it soon and it’ll make companies do fast fashion.

 

 Second, wear clothes made of sustainable material. Not using chemical materials too much can decrease the amount of wastewater.

 

 Lastly, sell clothes you don’t wear anymore at the second-hand market. This will reduce the amount of waste and also help the poor who need clothing at low prices.

 

 We must keep interested and action to save our beloved planet. So why don’t you start slow fashion with me?
