The holiday originated from an ancient Celtic* festival called Samhain.* It took place about 2,000 years ago. People wore costumes around a bonfire and warded off ghosts.

Some of the Samhain customs influenced today’s Halloween traditions. For example, people dress up in spooky costumes on Halloween. They look like witches, monsters, ghosts, and so on.

Also, people decorate their houses with scary items on Halloween. They put fake spiderwebs and skeletons around their houses. They add spooky lights to windows and fences.

At night, kids go trick-or-treating* in their neighborhood. They go door-to-door and ask for candy.

Jack-O’-Lantern

One popular Halloween symbol is a pumpkin lantern called jack-o’-lantern. People carve faces into pumpkins and put candles inside. They believe that the lanterns ward off evil spirits.

Black and Orange

The traditional Halloween colors are black and orange. They also come from Samhain. Black represents death and darkness. Orange symbolizes the fall season and fire.
